Preparation Welcome to media education. The ‘Video and Communication’ wants to explore practical media education. The central focus is video production and its pedagogical value. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the www.mediaeduaction.net website. Start with the short video ‘What is media education?’, download the booklet ‘Media Education across the Curriculum’ and explore the ideas given there. This will give you a background of where we will build the course on.

Once your funding is granted you need to register with our online course forum where we will get to know each other and discuss the further preparations of the course.
Objectives The ‚Video and Communication’ course will explore the pedagogical value of practical media work in the classroom for children (main target age 9 to 12) in a cross curriculum context. The course will provide theoretical (critical media awareness) and practical input (mainly digital video production). A special focus will be the area of intercultural education.

The course builds on our experience in European media educational projects such as “Television News on Europe”, “Speech Bubbles” or the “Media Education across the Curriculum”.

Following subjects will be in the forefront:
- Media education in general
- Cross-curriculum media education in the age group 9 – 12
- Media education in Europe
- Practical media work involving production and analysis
- Media work and intercultural education

Following activities will take place:
- Simulated media lessons
- Development of media educational concepts
- Collective video production
- Streaming video clips on online platforms
- Introduction to digital video camera and editing
- Studio workshop at the Open Channel Berlin
Methodology The methodology is based on our media educational vision:

- Engaging with the world around you: Media education is about engaging with the world around us. It is about the exploration of the messages and the values behind it.

- Empowering children to become active producers: The course will put you in the position of becoming a producer yourself. Our concepts are based on the idea that the children explore media production themselves.

- Following project oriented frameworks: Our media education approach works within projects where team work plays a crucial part. We will work in tasks, which will be evaluated during and at the end.

- Experiencing the European dimension: Media education is also about intercultural education. At the same time we will experience working in European teams – becoming more aware of where we come from and what Europe really constitutes.
Follow-up Follow-up:
- A written evaluation report (questions will be provided)
- Including the course results on the mediaeducation.net web
- Feedback about the application of the course in the school
- Expanding the course video gallery with new material
- Offer for co-operation in our European networks
- Developing joint European projects together within the team
